A Movie Review... From me?

So normally I don't post about movies... I find critics to be tiresome. I don't need someone to make up my mind for me about a very personal experience such as the music I listen to, the books I read, and Especially not about the movies I watch... So that being said...

If you have not been yet, go see Avatar... I can understand why this movie took 15 years to be made. The characters are a bit over the top, but aren't most good movie characters. The dialogue is stilted at times, the action is a bit overdone, and it feels preachy if you let it.

To hell with all that, it's entertaining, endearing, visually stunning, and a game changer in the cinema landscape.

A few years ago another movie changed the landscape, and raised the bar for everyone who followed... This movie was Lord of the Rings... It showed that people are willing to sit through longer than average movies set in a fantasy world. Shocking isn't it... People like a story they can really get into, they like a setting that is more than just a backlot set, the imagination cries out to be stimulated... It's a wonder movie studios still exist when something like that comes as a surprise to the people in charge...

I think that it's pretty elementary that most people enjoy a good story, also that the setting and characters have to feel real. A lot of movies forget this... A lot of writers, and directors forget this. I'm proud to say that James Cameron has not forgotten.

The theatre where I saw Avatar, the movie was screened in 3D, which I am rarely a fan of, this is because I wear glasses. The people who design 3D glasses pay lip service to the thought that people who wear glasses may want to see a 3D movie by making them fit over my glasses. This however does create some issues with my eyes while watching movies and wearing them. First my eyes get tired, watery, and my vision gets blurry at times. I have to look off screen a few seconds to get them to focus properly. In light of this, I was surprised to find my eyes almost never left the screen. I couldn't. So fixated with the action, story and characters on screen, my eyes were glued to the movie. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so all I will say is that the CG while noticeable, does not pull you out of the movie, and on Pandora it feels like the only things not CG are human.

The Na'vi are incredible to behold, and the times they are on screen with humans damned near caused me to have a geek-gasm... They look real, like you could reach out and touch one... Though if they were real, I would advise against touching them. It might be considered dangerous if they took offence...

Watching one cradle a lifeless Sigourney Weaver, carrying her like she was a sock puppet was something to behold... I mean really, this was Ellen F@^#ing Ripley... The baddest of the bad... Looking like a child's toy in the arms of the Na'vi.

So like I said, I'm not in it to spoil it for the 3 people who still haven't seen Avatar... In all sincerity this was a great movie, a game changer for movies to come. I look forward to seeing where this overfed Behemoth of a movie industry takes us next. Hopefully somewhere just as awe-inspiring as Avatar. But I won't hold my breath...
