It’s a fact. Comic book movies tend to make the best scripts for Hollywood films for one main reason. They capture the imagination of the reader, and are played out visually like a screenplay.
Nowhere is this more prevalent than in Warner Bros.’ latest offering: The Losers.
Based on the DC/Vertigo book of the same name, written by Andy Diggle, The Losers is an action-lover’s dream.
The Plot is simple Clay, played by Jeffery Dean Morgan (Watchmen) and his team Jensen (Chris Evans, Fantastic Four), Roque (Idris Elba, RocknRolla), Pooch (Columbus Short, Death at a Funeral) and Cougar (Oscar Jaenada) are a Special Forces team, who are betrayed by their handler, Max, played by Jason Patric (Speed 2: Cruise Control) after Clay betrays orders in order to save children from being massacred in an air-strike.
So after being left for dead, “The Losers” are stuck in Bolivia, until Aisha, played by the always gorgeous Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Avatar), comes out of the woodwork, and offers to bring them back to the U.S. and fund their revenge against Max as long as they kill him. Her motives as to why are unknown.
So The Losers are back in the U.S., and are working to take down Max.
Pretty Simple?
The story is rather simplistic itself, but it plays out really well on the big screen. Featuring a lot of explosions, some very well choreographed fight scenes and some great slow motion bullet action.
The film itself has a lot of “Geek Cred”, featuring a cast that has a lot of past and future experience in the Comic book/Sci-Fi genre, which will satiate most of the hardcore geeks out there, and the action will be enough to satisfy anyone’s thirst for violence.
Chris Evans, for me was the unsung hero of the film, his character: Jensen, who is obviously the comic relief of the film, is pulled off brilliantly. His solo scenes are great, and his interaction with the cast is great. The scene in the elevator [seen in the trailer] is hilarious, and even leading up to it is done very well, so even people who enjoy a bit of comedy laced in will get a kick out of it.
Zoe Saldana is gorgeous, and not too hard on the eyes. But then again, when isn’t she? Her character is not only stunning, but a total badass as well.
I certainly enjoyed the film. I felt that if I had not read the comic beforehand, I would have gained enough of an appreciation for the film standing alone on its merit. So anyone who is not familiar with the source material will enjoy it, and maybe want to read it.
The action itself is not too unbelievable or over-the-top. Most of the things that happen [I said most!] are a real-life possibility, so you don’t have to gawk at the guy beside you and say “Man, that could never happen!” The truth is, the only unrealistic thing I could see never happening, is me getting a chance to have sex with Zoe Saldana.
Those who don’t care for the comic book, or action film genre will probably not enjoy it as much. Those [like me] who enjoy these types of films will not leave unsatisfied.
At a budget of $25 million, Warner Bros. can easily recover that with a good weekend at the box office, but I do not see this movie being number 1 after this weekend. It is marketed at a specific type of moviegoer and even with a PG rating in Canada, I still see people flocking to other films still in theaters, or even next weekend, with the release of Iron Man 2.
I give The Losers 8 ½ out of 10. I recommend it to anyone who wants to just let loose and enjoy a good paced action film.
