By FORCH F. FORTIER. I have always been a fan of Mike Myers.
But after the 2008 film, The Love Guru, my faith in Myers has been shaken.
Myers (Austin Powers), stars as Guru Maurice Pitka, the second most popular Guru, next to Deepak Chopra. This fact angers Pitka, who obsesses about being the greatest Guru in the world. Enter Jane Bullard, played by Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four), who is the owner of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Her star player, Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) is suffering from stress after his wife; Prudence (Meagan Good) left him for the L.A. Kings’ star Goalie, Jacques “Le Coq” Grande (Played brilliantly by Justin Timberlake).
Pitka takes the job, after being told that if he can get Darren and Prudence to get back together, that he will become a guest on Oprah, and if he does, then he’ll be on his way to being the next Deepak Chopra.
Featuring Myers’ signature sophomoric humor that had endeared him into our hearts with the Austin Powers series, as well as the Wayne’s World films, The Love Guru should have been another hit.
I use the word should.
The fact is, that in parts there are some funny moments, however the idea behind the movie is just ridiculous. First off, Myer’s character, Pitka looks just ridiculous. His portrayal is so over the top, that you really have a hard time following the movie.
The movie does have some funny moments, but not enough for it to make it a classic.
On the good side of the film, Justin Timberlake’s performance was hilarious. Anyone who lives in Canada knows how much fun it is to make fun of French Canadians, and his performance was hilarious! Specifically the part about the “Quebec Pizza”, every time I hear that line, I do chortle so.
Stephen Colbert was also very good in the film, as Hockey Night in Canada announcer, Jay Kell. Colbert seems to have the golden touch, as he has the keys to my funny bone.
I also want to know what convinced Ben Kingsley to take the role of Guru Tugginmypudha. He’s too good of an actor to be in a film this bad.
I give The Love Guru 3 out of 10.
